GEORGE TOWN:
PKR is disappointed with the way in which Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Jailani Johari brushed aside criticism on the speed of the 4G service in Malaysia, calling it a missed opportunity to address the actual issue.

PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said Jailani’s advice not to compare the speed of Malaysia’s 4G with that of other countries was similar to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) reaction to Malaysia’s slide down the ranks of Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI).

“Will Jailani now propose that Malaysia create its own 4G speed comparison report, to challenge the report by OpenSignal?” he said, adding that the real issue was how to speed up the slow 4G service.

Jailani had urged Malaysians not to compare the country’s internet speeds with that of neighbouring nations, saying the approach used by respective governments was different.

He also said the Malaysian government preferred to focus on the internet coverage throughout the country.

“Vietnam is more focused on Ho Chi Minh City whereas in Malaysia, the focus is more comprehensive.

“In Malaysia, our broadband and 4G networks are focused on the whole country, so it’s not the same situation.

“The same goes for Singapore, where the population is not the same as Malaysia,” he was reported as saying.

Fahmi however said a more constructive approach must be found, which addressed the calls for faster 4G as well as the concerns of service providers over issues such as the placement of telco towers.

“To brush aside criticism regarding the speed of 4G service in Malaysia, as Jailani has done, does not inspire leadership.

“Malaysians want faster 4G.”

According to a report by OpenSignal, a company specialising in wireless coverage mapping, the 4G speed in Malaysia is only 14.83Mbps, although the technology is available 74.88% of the time.

In contrast, Singapore, which has 84.43% availability, offers a 4G speed of 44.31Mbps – the best among the 88 countries surveyed by OpenSignal.

In terms of availability, South Korea leads with 97.49%, followed by Japan (94.70%) and Norway (92.16%).

Malaysia is 42nd on the list. In terms of speed, Malaysia is at 69th position.
