PETALING JAYA:
myPPP president M Kayveas has flayed DAP as arrogant for telling Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) to make way for it in Cameron Highlands in the coming polls.

He said the statement by former DAP Cameron Highlands candidate M Manogaran that PSM should not spoil the chances of Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the federal seat was selfish.

“This stems from the arrogance that people associate DAP with. They expect other party hopefuls to clear the path for their candidates.

“Without putting in any hard work, they just appear during elections and expect people to give them blind support,” said Kayveas in a statement today.

Kayveas has stated his interest in contesting the seat under the Barisan Nasional (BN) banner although the MIC reportedly is not giving it up.

The incumbent MP, G Palanivel, won the seat in the 2013 general election when he was the MIC president, but he has since left the party.

DAP is a component party of PH which also includes PKR, Amanah and PPBM.

Kayveas said DAP should welcome competition for the Cameron Highlands seat.

“DAP should not be arrogant and throw their weight around asking PSM to step aside for them.

“Do you consider the work they (PSM) have done (in Cameron Highlands) as not worthwhile and only the work DAP does as worthy?”

Kayveas said he had been working the ground in the constituency for the past four years.

“I have organised and attended more than 600 events there since I stay there six days a week. So I say the more the merrier and may the best candidate win.

“DAP clearly does not like competition and to call PSM spoilers is hitting below the belt.

“Is DAP afraid of fresh competition or can DAP only perform if there are fewer candidates contesting?”

Kayveas said the infighting between opposition parties in Cameron Highlands was a reason the people there were happy with BN.

“People tell me every time though they are tempted by the sweet promises of the opposition, they are still putting their trust in BN because of the stability and growth it brings to its constituencies.

“They tell me they will vote for me because I am local. As a local who often meets them and talks to them, I understand their problems.

“They want a candidate who can speak up for them on the issues which are specific to Cameron Highlands.”
