PETALING JAYA:
PPBM will keep up the pressure on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to reveal details of its investigation on alleged attempts to bribe members to quit the party.

The party’s lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla said this yesterday, when questioning why the anti-graft agency had not disclosed any information since an individual had been allegedly arrested over the issue on Feb 5.

He alleged that the suspect was not subjected to a remand proceeding and was instead released, possibly on bail by the MACC.

“When will they call the person for further investigation? What is the status of the investigation?” Haniff asked.

He also questioned if the investigation paper had been submitted to the public prosecutor for further action.

On Feb 11, Haniff had given MACC 48 hours to reveal details on the individual.

This came about after PPBM women’s wing chief Rina Mohd Harun alleged on Feb 5 that someone had offered inducement to a member to hold a press conference to tarnish the party’s image.

She said the member had rejected the offer and passed her evidence of the bribery attempt, which she gave to MACC when lodging a report with the anti-graft agency.

According to Rina, she then found out that MACC had arrested the person.

The next day, PPBM president Dr Mahathir Mohamad claimed that the individual was a former party leader.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Azam Baki told FMT at the time that he would check if there was such a case.

Haniff said he would keep questioning MACC on the case and also make “necessary” exposures about it in due time.

He claimed that PPBM had information based on its own investigation on the matter.

“How do we report it to MACC when it remains silent about the case?” he asked.

He said PPBM would prove that the arrest had indeed taken place if MACC dared to claim that it did not happen.

“And if they say that it is still under investigation, then they must explain what is the current status and why the suspect was not remanded,” Hamiff said.

He added that PPBM would take appropriate legal action if MACC remained silent.
