Tanjung Court Condominium residents’ ad hoc committee chief Suthakar Kathirveloo said the guard was trying to save him from being punched by a group of three men.
Suthakar, when contacted, said a visitor had attempted to enter a guard post meant for residents with an access card about 8.30pm.
Suthakar said the guard, Helen Chew, told the visitor to back out and enter another guard post not far away.
“Then, a resident who was expecting the visitor started scolding the guard. His house is on the ground floor close to the guard house.
“At that time, I had just returned from shopping with my family. I alighted from my car and advised the men to head to another gate meant for visitors.
“They got angry and started hurling profanities at me, saying ‘you tahu ini hari apa?’ (you know what day it is today?) repeatedly. I suppose he meant reunion dinner on Chinese New Year’s eve.
“One of the men pulled my hand and started scolding me. And another older man tried to throw a punch at me. Helen came in between to protect me.
“The situation was very tense because a few men had circled us and I feared they might bash us up. I went back to my car, fearing for my safety.
“As I got into the car, the men started knocking at my car, threatening me and my family,” Suthakar said.
He said he lodged a police report the next day, detailing the incident he had witnessed.
Suthakar claimed the resident concerned and his family were unhappy with the access card system installed at the condominium complex.
“They often scolded the guards as they had to slow down to scan their cards before entry. The rest of the residents are happy with the system as it is more secure,” he said.
The condominium has about 3,000 residents in 14 blocks with six floors each at Lebuhraya Thean Teik, Bandar Baru Air Itam.
Yesterday, a resident uploaded a series of videos showing the guard being assaulted by several men. In the video, Suthakar is seen trying to calm them down.
Chew was overpowered by a shirtless man, who later pushed her to the ground and punched her.
The incident occurred in full view of concerned residents who tried to stop the man, who was also spewing expletives at the guard.
A few minutes later, the situation came under control when another man managed to restrain the shirtless man.
