Suspected abuse: Dad held after death of baby girl

The lorry driver, aged 22, was detained after baby found to have multiple injuries, including broken leg.

A 46-day-old baby girl, who died enroute to the hospital this morning, was believed to have been a victim of abuse at home in Kampung Tok Panjang, Bukit Tengah, here.

Nurul Ain Umairah Muhammad Firdaus succumbed to her injuries at 10.45am.

It is understood the victim also had signs of old injuries and bruises.

Seberang Perai Tengah police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said an initial medical examination and X-ray scan at the Seberang Jaya Hospital (HSJ) revealed the baby had sustained multiple injuries, including a broken leg.

He said the police detained the victim’s father who worked as a lorry driver to facilitate investigations under Section 31 (1) (a) of the Child Act 2001.

Tomorrow, the 22-year-old would be taken to the magistrate’s court here for a remand order, he said, adding that a post-mortem would be carried out at the HSJ tomorrow.
