Kit Siang denies DAP wants to destroy MCA

He says MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong's claim is a desperate move to woo Chinese voters ahead of GE14.

PETALING JAYA: Lim Kit Siang has ridiculed MCA for its “pathetic” attempt to appeal for support from the Chinese community and claiming that DAP wants to “destroy” the Barisan Nasional component.

The DAP supremo was referring to a front-page report in the Sin Chew Daily today headlined “Wee Ka Siong: Beg Chinese community not to let MCA be destroyed”.

“How pitiable and pathetic for MCA leaders to send an SOS appeal to the Chinese community in the face of a fictitious DAP plot to destroy MCA.

“This is a most desperate move by the MCA leadership to beg for Chinese votes for the 14th general election (GE14),” Lim said in a statement, citing the vernacular paper’s interview with the MCA deputy president.

The Gelang Patah MP said DAP, since its formation in 1966, had only wanted other parties to live up to their responsibilities to the people.

“It has never been the intention of DAP to ‘destroy’ MCA, just as it is not our intention to destroy Umno, Gerakan, MIC or any other political party.

“We want to challenge these parties to better represent the interests of citizens, regardless of race or religion.

“DAP cannot destroy MCA or Umno. Only MCA can destroy MCA. Only Umno can destroy Umno,” said Lim, who is also DAP parliamentary leader.

Lim said past general election results had shown that the support base for MCA was not the Chinese community at all.

“The present MCA national leaders have created history. Never before had the three top leaders of MCA won their seats in Parliament based on Umno’s Malay votes.

“They all contested in constituencies where the Malay voters exceeded the number of Chinese voters.

“This was the case in Betong where MCA president Liow Tiong Lai is MP, in Ayer Hitam where Wee is MP and Tanjung Malim where MCA secretary-general Ong Ka Chuan is MP.”

Lim said for Wee and Ong, the Malay voter base exceeded 50%, with the Chinese community accounting for less than 30% of voters.

“This has never happened before in the 69-year history of MCA.

“MCA’s top leaders solely depend on Umno votes in get into Parliament.

“In the cabinet, they are unable to say a single word against the corruption, abuses of power and injustices of the BN government.”
