SEREMBAN: The education ministry will conduct an internal inquiry on the death of a Form Two student who was hit by a flying blade from a lawn-mowing tractor in a freak incident at SMK Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Gemas, Negeri Sembilan, here today.

The ministry said a special committee would be set up for the purpose of the inquiry, to be chaired by the Negeri Sembilan education director, Bernama reported.

The ministry said in a statement that based on a preliminary report, the incident happened while students at the school were having a rehearsal for the Sports’ Day parade at the school field.

The New Straits Times had earlier today quoted Tampin district police chief Supt Hamazah Abd Razak as saying that Nur Afini Roslan, 14, died at the scene after her head was hit by the blade in the incident at 10.30am.

He said two other victims, Abdullah Hazlan, 14, and Mohd Farhan Reza Badrol Hesam, 13, suffered light injuries.

The ministry added in its statement that the lawn tractor was cutting grass about 30 metres away.

“When the tractor stopped, a loud sound was heard by students involved in the rehearsal.

“At the same time, teachers supervising the rehearsal found three students injured on the head,” it said.

The ministry said it was seeking the cooperation of all quarters to stop spreading information on the incident as a sign of respect for the family of the deceased student, as well as the traumatised teachers and students at the school.
