PETALING JAYA:
More than 30,000 signatures objecting to the proposed redelineation of electoral boundaries for parliamentary and state constituencies in Selangor were handed over to the Election Commission (EC) today.

In total, 200 objections were made over the way in which the redelineation has been carried out in Selangor. One objection needs a minimum of 100 signatures.

Bersih 2.0 and Pakatan Harapan (PH), in forwarding the objections, urged the EC not to rush the exercise but to carefully implement it so that fairness is achieved.

Tomorrow is the last day to submit objections to the EC on the redelineation exercise in Selangor.

Speaking to the media here, PH president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the objections were collected with the help of PH and Bersih.

“These objections represent the voices of the people in Selangor who are hoping that the EC acts more professionally and fairly, without being in favour of any political party.

“The objections were also made to guarantee the rights of Selangor voters,” she said.

Wan Azizah, who is also PKR president, said the EC must hear the objections made by voters.

“We hope the EC takes into account these objections to ensure fairness in all state and parliamentary seats. The unbalanced amount of voters is obvious in Selangor where, for instance, N01 Sabak has 15,033 voters while N29 Seri Serdang has 74,563.

“In the second proposal, parliamentary seats such as Gombak, Ampang, Pandan, Kuala Selangor and Tanjong Karang are most affected and we hope the EC will look into these objections, especially those made by voters of the particular constituencies.”

Meanwhile, PKR’s Sri Andalas assemblyman Xavier Jeyakumar urged the EC not to rush through the process just because there was a deadline or date given.

“It is more important to look through the objections and listen to them before making a decision,” said the Selangor PH elections director.

Agreeing with Jeyakumar, Bersih chairman Maria Chin Abdullah said the EC did not have to rush through the process.

“The deadline is actually in October so we don’t understand why they are rushing the redelineation exercise. Is it done for the election? I’m not sure why there is such a rush.

“Also, last year the inquiry was held during Christmas which was not fair.”

PH deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin said if the objections had merit, the EC should accept their suggestions instead of doing something that could bring a loss to Selangor voters.

“I am asking the EC to take its time to go through each objection.

“This is about the rights of the people, justice, democracy and what is guaranteed by the Federal Constitution,” he said.

The second local inquiry will be held after the EC’s public display of the updated boundaries for the state ends on Feb 14.
