Fauzi said Salleh’s name was not in the list of candidates to contest in GE14.
“He is not being chosen as a candidate to contest in GE14. However, he remains a PAS member.
“He will not contest. He has already been given his time in the state assembly,” he told reporters after a dialogue session between PAS and Indian NGOs in Kepala Batas, near here, today.
When asked on who will replace Salleh in Permatang Pasir, Fauzi said there were many potential candidates and will announce it in due course.
“Our aim is to bring the voice of Islam to the state assembly. That is what we want to do.
“We want fresh faces with potential in the party,” he said.
Salleh, in an immediate response to his name being dropped, said: “Alhamdulillah.”
When asked on his future plans, Salleh said he would continue serving the people to the best of his capability.
Salleh’s position has been in question since 2016, when PAS declared itself as an opposition party in Penang, following the state government’s move in sacking 300 members of the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK), from among PAS members, in the Kepala Batas parliamentary area.
His position was thrown into further doubt when PAS approved a motion to cut off political ties with PKR.
At one point in 2015, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said Salleh was still part of the PH state government although Pakatan Rakyat had become defunct.
He said his state government did not have any qualms about working with anyone who supported the state administration.
Salleh won the Permatang Pasir state seat in the August 2009 by-election, held after the death of incumbent assemblyman and then PAS state commissioner Mohd Hamdan Abdul Rahman.
Earlier, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, at a press conference here earlier, said the PAS Syura Council had approved the list of candidates submitted by the state PAS committees.
“The list has been finalised for both state and parliamentary seats. The Syura Council approved it three weeks ago.
“There may be many new faces as the current crop of leaders is already advanced in their years,” he said, adding that the candidates will also include women and non-Muslims.
Hadi further stated that the Islamist party will be contesting in seats that Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan are contesting.
