BUTTERWORTH:
The list of PAS candidates for the upcoming 14th general election (GE14) has been finalised, party president Abdul Hadi Awang said today.

The Marang MP said that the party’s Syura Council had approved the list based on recommended names submitted by the respective state PAS committees.

“The list has been finalised for both state and parliamentary seats. The Syura Council approved it three weeks ago,” he said.

“There would be many new faces as the current crop of leaders is already advanced in years,” he said.

He added that the candidates would also include women and non-Muslims.

Hadi was speaking at a press conference after a dialogue session with Indian non-governmental organisations in a hotel in Kepala Batas near here today.

He also said the Islamist party would contest in constituencies where Barisan Nasional (BN) was likely to run.

He said it did not matter whether it was BN or Pakatan Harapan (PH) that was facing the party.

“This does not have anything to do with anyone. Whether it is Umno or DAP contesting, PAS will also contest,” he said.

In September last year, PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said that the Islamist party would only be a spoiler in GE14, as it had never won enough seats to threaten BN’s dominance in Putrajaya.

He also reportedly said that by creating three-cornered fights, PAS would end up prolonging BN’s rule.

PAS research centre director Mohd Zuhdi Marzuki had previously said that the party would vie in no less than 130 parliamentary seats, out of the 222 seats in the Dewan Rakyat.

He said that the remaining seats would be contested by fellow components in the Gagasan Sejahtera coalition, NGOs and certain eminent persons supporting the pact.

Apart from PAS, Gagasan Sejahtera also consists of Parti Cinta Malaysia and Parti Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia.

In the last general election in May 2013, PAS won 21 out of 73 parliamentary seats it contested.

Some of the legislators have since quit the party and joined splinter Amanah. which is part of the PH coalition.
