PETALING JAYA: MIC president Dr S Subramaniam has dismissed any suggestion that he will be contesting in the Hulu Selangor parliamentary seat in the next general election (GE14).

In a strongly worded statement, the health minister who is the current Segamat MP, called a report published by FMT today over his and other MIC leaders seat allocations in GE14, as “baseless speculation”.

“The article referring to MIC candidates and the seats they are contesting published in today’s FMT is distasteful and imaginative.

“There is not even an iota of truth in it. At worst it can even be seen as an attempt to destabilise MIC and to damage specific individuals,” said Subramaniam who is also health minister.

He also questioned if the senior leaders referred to as the source for the information even existed.

“As for me, as the incumbent MP of Segamat, I am working very hard in Segamat to ensure a BN victory.

“We all know that in 2008 and 2013 Segamat was considered a ‘hot seat’ by virtue of its voter demographics. That did not deter me for contesting there. I have never been deterred by my opponents,” he said.

“In the end Prime Minister Najib Razak and myself will decide in which seat I am going to contest.”

He added that he was not obliged to give any conclusive information to the media now as it is common knowledge that all such decisions are made collectively by the BN leadership and that final announcements will be made at an appropriate date.

“The list of potential candidates have been submitted to the PM for vetting and assessment. Till such time everything remains speculative and dynamic.”
