4 remanded over firecracker explosion in Sungai Petani

Twenty-six devotees were injured in a firecracker explosion during Thaipusam celebration near the Sri Subramaniya Swami Temple in Sungai Petani.

ALOR SETAR: The four men who were detained in connection with the firecracker explosion near the Sri Subramaniya Swami Temple in Sungai Petani last night, have been remanded for four days.

Kuala Muda district police chief ACP Saifi Abdul Hamid, in a statement today, said the four men, aged between 25 and 34, were remanded from today until Monday.

In the 8.30pm incident, 26 devotees, comprising 14 men and 12 women, aged between five and 59, were injured during Thaipusam celebration at the temple.

Four of the victims were warded at the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani while the others were given outpatient treatment.

Earlier, Saifi informed that police detained the four men around midnight to facilitate investigations under Section 324 of the Penal Code and Section 4 of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.
