Woman charged with ill-treating son

She is alleged to have caned the boy on his face and body, and could face jail of up to 10 years if convicted.

MELAKA: A woman pleaded not guilty in the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court today to ill-treating her five-year-old son nine years ago.

The 40-year-old woman, who was arrested yesterday, is alleged to have caned the boy, the second of four siblings, on the face and body, resulting in bruises on the head, face and body, at a shophouse at about 2pm on April 21, 2009.

The woman, who works as a masseuse, was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 which provides for a maximum fine of RM20,000 or a jail term of up to 10 years, or both, upon conviction.

Judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi allowed the woman to be released on bail of RM10,000 in one surety and set March 1 for mention.

DPP Siti Ruvinna Mohd Rawi appeared for the prosecution while the woman was represented by Nahdan Rengganathan Abdullah.
