PETALING JAYA: Yoodo, a new telco service, was launched today aimed at “digital natives” who desire a customisable mobile service.

The telco, which is owned and operated by Celcom Axiata Berhad, provides customers with fully customisable plans that gives them the option to choose a mix of data, call minutes and SMS from up to 1,000 possible combinations.

For example, Yoodo allows customers to buy as little as 2GB of data for RM20 a month right up to 100GB of data for RM150 a month.

Customers can also choose the amount of call minutes and SMS, from as low as RM5/month for 50 minutes, and RM3 a month for 50 SMS. There’s an option to add data solely for social media.

The service allows customers to change their plan each month with no charge, so plans are always up to the customer’s needs.

According to Yoodo chief executive officer Farid Yunus, the service is a hybrid between a postpaid and prepaid mobile service.

“Customers have to register their debit or credit card which works just like Uber,” he said at the launch event here.

Meanwhile, he said the Yoodo service is independent despite being under Celcom Axiata.

“Though owned and operated by Celcom, we really are independent. They have given us the money to start this, so basically, we are like a start-up and they have funded us,” Farid said.

Yoodo also provides a “Roam-like-Home” service which allows its customers to use its locally bought quota overseas with a roaming charge of just RM10 a day.

That service is currently available across 12 countries, namely Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia, Philippines, Laos and Brunei.

Customers can order a free SIM via the app or web and have the option of Standard Delivery (within 1–3 days) or Express Delivery, where the SIM will be delivered within two hours.

For express delivery, RM15 will be charged and this is currently available only in the Klang Valley.

Activation of the SIM is done via the app and users will self-authenticate their identity using their IC or passport and facial recognition.

The Yoodo app is universally available for all Android and iOS devices.

Farid said Yoodo has a target of 200,000 subscribers by the end of the year.
