Her daughter and civil rights activist Marina Mahathir informed about the association’s decision in a Twitter posting this morning, just two days after the 91-year old was questioned by police over her involvement in a protest rally last year.
“Thanks for your support for Mum. Just to highlight more silliness: the Wheelchair Tennis Association actually passed a resolution to ask Mum to step down as patron,” she said in the tweet.
“That’s how petty it’s getting,” she added.
When contacted, Marina said Siti Hamah was fine with the decision and had said it was okay.
An aide of Siti Hasmah told FMT that the letter was dated Dec 28 last year after the association’s committee passed a resolution at its annual general meeting.
However, it was only delivered by hand around Jan 22 and later shown to Siti Hasmah, the aide said.
FMT has attempted to contact the association but has been unable to reach it for comment.
Siti Hasmah, whose husband Mahathir was prime minister for 22 years till 2003, was quizzed by the police on Friday for speaking at the “Women Against Toxic Politics” rally on Sep 10 last year which was attended by some 1,000 people, including opposition politicians and rights activists.
Both Siti Hasmah and Mahathir had addressed the crowd, which had gathered along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman before marching to Pertama Complex in the city centre.
