KUALA LUMPUR:
Police are questioning Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali over her participation in a women’s rally in Kuala Lumpur last September.

An aide had told FMT that Siti Hasmah, 91, the wife of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, would be questioned at the AlBukhary Foundation in the city.

Two police officers, believed to be from the Dang Wangi police headquarters, arrived at the foundation at about 11.33am, carrying several documents.

Siti Hasmah was accompanied by lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdulla, her daughter Marina Mahathir, and several activists who had been there since 10am.

The “Women Against Toxic Politics” rally on Sep 10 was attended by some 1,000 people, including opposition politicians and rights activists.

Both Siti Hasmah and Mahathir had addressed the crowd, which had gathered along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman before marching to Pertama Complex in the city centre.

Marina, the couple’s eldest daughter, earlier said she would be present to show her support.

“Off to lend support to Mum while she’s being questioned by the cops for her speech at #wanitabantahpolitiktoksik last September. Imagine that! Some of us women going to keep her company. #whatisthiscountrycomingto,” she posted on Twitter.
