KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested a woman, who is an engineering consultant, to assist in the investigation into alleged corruption in the Penang undersea tunnel project.

According to sources, the 50-year-old woman was arrested at 6.10pm yesterday when she went to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya to give her statement.

“It is learnt that the woman is a senior consultant at the company responsible for the project.

“She is believed to be involved in the preparation of false claims for the feasibility study of the three major roads and undersea tunnel in Penang worth about RM305 million submitted to the state government,” the source said.

He said MACC was also investigating whether other individuals were involved in the falsification of the documents.

When contacted, MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Azam Baki confirmed the arrest but refused further comment.

The project involving the construction of three main roads and the 7.2km undersea tunnel connecting Gurney Drive to Bagan Ajam in Seberang Perai was awarded to Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd, which comprises several companies.

The project stirred controversy, mainly over the high cost of the feasibility study, as well as payment methods involving the exchange of state government land. Some islanders are also concerned over the economic, social and environmental impact it may have.

On Jan 10, a deputy chairman of a property development company and a senior executive director of a company, both with Datuk titles, were remanded for six days to facilitate investigations into the case.
