Sabah DAP claims voter discrepancy rampant in new electoral rolls

Opposition party calls for voters in Sabah to check electoral list on public display, after many cases of more than 10 voters registered under one address.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah DAP has alleged that the latest list of voters in the Luyang constituency published by the Election Commission (EC) has several discrepancies that merit revisions.

Sabah DAP publicity secretary Phoong Jin Zhe said when scrutinising the list which was publicly displayed on Jan 12, there were several cases of more than 10 new voters registered under one house.

In one of the houses at Taman Fu Yun, for example, the electoral roll listed down 13 new voters.

“This raised our suspicion and we decided to visit the house to know if it is true that 13 people live there. The homeowner, whose name was on the roll, denied knowing the other 12 people named as living in the same house,” he said.

The woman, whom he said wanted to remain anonymous, had also admitted she went to the MCA service centre in Luyang last month to register as a voter.

“She alleged she was asked to leave her MyKad at the centre for a day,” Phoong said, adding that the woman plans to file a complaint with the EC.

According to Phoong, there is another house in Taman Mutiara which 12 people had allegedly given as their address, while in Taman Luyang, eight new voters are registered as staying in one single-storey home.

“I am not saying that MCA did anything to manipulate the electoral roll. It could be just a coincidence that this happened. It is probably unrelated.

“The point is, since the last day for objection is on Jan 31, I urge the public to check the electoral rolls in their respective areas and raise objections if any, before the lists are gazetted,” he said.

The latest electoral rolls are currently on display in various public spaces including district offices, post offices and government buildings.

Meanwhile, Sabah DAP adviser Jimmy Wong advised the public to go to the polling booth as early as possible on election day.

In the last election, he alleged he was approached by several of his constituents who complained they could not vote because ‘someone else had voted for them’.

“This coming election will not only be the mother of all elections, it will be the mother of all dirty elections. Local Sabahans must go and vote early because otherwise, other people might vote on their behalf,” he said.
