Klang MP Charles Santiago made the call in the wake of Najib’s frank admission today on the “failings at the sovereign fund”.
“Najib should take credible measures if he was sincere in his admission.
“He should do it before the general election too. If it is a mistake, he would want to rectify the mistake by being credible,” the DAP man said .
Santiago was commenting on Najib’s comments in a speech at the Invest Malaysia 2018 conference today, where he said that there was “valid cause for concern” over 1MDB’s state of affairs which had triggered investigations in several parts of the world.
Najib, who is also finance minister, had also said that he was not going to brush off the issue as there were indeed failings in the company and lapses of governance.
According to Najib, the government was aware of 1MDB’s failings, which was why it had launched an investigation involving multiple authorities.
However, Santiago said Najib should take firm action against those responsible for 1MDB’s failings.
1MDB was created by the government to promote long-term economic development for the benefit of the Malaysian people.
Najib said the state-owned firm had rationalised its assets and, with the proceeds, had taken an aggressive approach to reduce its debts to the lowest possible levels.
Meanwhile, Batu MP Tian Chua hit out at Najib for his delayed acknowledgement on 1MDB’s failings.
“He should have acknowledged the mistake when it was first reported in the media.
Tian Chua said Najib should now take action against businessman Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, and others related to the case.
“If Najib is sincere, he would take action, else, where is the logic of saying it is a mistake.”
