
Sabah special tasks minister Teo Chee Kang said the only thing that kept the parties in the coalition together was their desire for power.
He said this desire will soon be subdued by the inherent distrust and conflict of ideologies within the political pact.
“The naming of 92-year-old Dr Mahathir Mohamad as their candidate for prime minister has reaffirmed the fact that they have no suitable leader to helm the nation.
“Whether or not Mahathir is a transitional PM, whether or not PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim can secure a royal pardon and can become the eighth PM, Pakatan Harapan is telling Malaysians that they can only offer old and recycled leaders.
“How then do they expect the people to believe they can lead Malaysia into the future?” Teo said in a statement.
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) president also found it amazing that all PKR and DAP leaders had hastily issued statements expressing support for Mahathir.
He said these people had previously been mercilessly attacking Mahathir as the person behind Project IC in Sabah, Operation Lalang, the Bank Negara forex scandal, the judicial crisis after the sacking of Lord President Salleh Abas and many more.
“I wonder whether their hearts contradict their minds when they sing praises for someone who was their enemy for decades,” he said.
On Sunday, during the coalition’s convention, PH chief secretary Saifuddin Abdullah announced Mahathir as the opposition’s prime minister candidate but the decision was immediately mocked by BN leaders.
Leaders such as Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) secretary-general Johnny Mositun said the decision proved that Mahathirism is well and alive in the opposition.
Sabah Umno deputy information chief Ramlee Marahaban said Mahathir’s endgame is all about making his son, Mukhriz, the eventual prime minister.
