State Communications, Multimedia and Special Functions Committee chairman Ghazali Taib said a census would be conducted beginning next month to determine their population.
“It will be conducted with the cooperation of the Village Development and Security Committee, police and the state Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council,” he said after presenting school aid under the “Back to School” programme here today.
The programme was jointly organised by the Federation of Peninsula Malay Students (GPMS).
Also present was Terengganu GPMS president Tengku Haphiz Tengku Putera and Hulu Terengganu Education officer Jalaluddin Ismail.
Ghazali, who is Ajil assemblyman, said the course would be held as part of the efforts to address the problem of transvestites.
He said this followed a media report which claimed that an area at Flat Petani, in the outskirts of Kuala Terengganu had become a popular haunt for transvestites.
