In a statement, Bersih said most urban voters in Selangor would be spending the week celebrating with their families and might also be on holiday.
“To summon voters during the holiday season manifests a total disregard for the festivities and displays a lack of care for the availability of voters.
“To rush for the elections is an unacceptable move as the EC has until September 2018 to complete its tasks. It is clear that the EC is deliberately disenfranchising voters for the sake of a political agenda.”
Yesterday, The Malaysian Insight reported that the EC had in a letter dated Dec 19 informed Selangor Speaker Hannah Yeoh that the local enquiry for the Kelana Jaya parliamentary seat would be held on Dec 27.
The letter came a day after the Court of Appeal ruled that the EC could now conduct its local inquiries in Selangor, paving the way for the redrawing of electoral boundaries.
Bersih also expressed disappointment with the courts for allowing the EC to proceed with the redelineation, which it described as “erroneous”, despite the fact that it had highlighted the errors and non-compliance to the Federal Constitution.
“It throws out all principles as stipulated in our constitution and ignores justice for the voters.”
The High Court had on Dec 7 dismissed Selangor’s judicial review application to challenge the EC’s exercise in redrawing the electoral boundaries, largely due to a binding Court of Appeal ruling.
Judge Azizul Azmi Adnan however allowed Selangor’s interim stay application pending the outcome of its appeal in the Court of Appeal to maintain the status quo.
The PKR-led Selangor government filed the legal challenge in October last year, seeking to nullify the EC’s notice of redelineation, claiming it violated the Federal Constitution in drawing new electoral boundaries.
