KUALA LUMPUR: The operator initially charged with managing Malaysian umrah pilgrims has complied with the government’s instruction to cancel its service with immediate effect on Dec 15.

Integrated Manasik Monitoring System (Imams) Sdn Bhd, in a statement today, however, said the company would continue to cooperate with the tourism and culture ministry and related parties to safeguard the interests of the pilgrims.

The cancellation of Imams was announced by Deputy Tourism and Culture Minister Mas Ermieyati Samsudin on Saturday following complaints it would incur additional costs to perform the umrah.

Mas Ermieyati said the government would look for a new and effective system to prevent fraudulent umrah packages.

Prime Minister Najib Razak had previously described the cancellation of Imams as an appropriate move as he did not agree to the system.
