PETALING JAYA: In what could easily pass for scenes from a television drama serial, a newly-wed man was arrested by police the morning after his wedding for allegedly helping his friend escape as police closed in on him at the wedding reception.

The incident, which took place in Alor Setar, Kedah on Sunday, first started at the reception held at the ballroom of a hotel in Jalan Putra, The Star reported.

The groom, 35, intervened when he saw that police had entered the venue looking for his friend, who was wanted for numerous crimes.

The groom had allegedly tried to distract the police team to help his friend escape.

According to Kota Setar district police chief Asst Comm Mohd Rozi Jidin, a few of his men had gone to the hotel when they found out the suspect they were looking for would be attending the wedding reception.

“A police team had gone to the ballroom at about 10pm on Sunday to arrest the man who was wanted for numerous crimes.

“A scuffle took place and the groom threw a glass at my men, injuring one of the officers on his left hand.

“During the commotion, the wanted man fled using the back door of the hotel,” Rozi was quoted as saying by the daily.

What followed the next morning was the police arresting the groom at his house.

Another commotion broke out as family members tried to stop police from taking the groom away.

“His family members recorded the whole thing and we believe it will soon go viral.

“Such intimidation will not stop us from carrying out our responsibilities.

“Those who break the law or try to stop the police from carrying out their duties will have to face the law,” Rozi told The Star.
