PETALING JAYA:
Sports commissioner Zaiton Othman has revealed that the organisers of the Klang City International Marathon did not apply for a licence to hold the event.

“We regret this deeply because the organisation of any event should get the approval of the sports commissioner as stated in the Sports Development Act 1997, as well as approval from the relevant bodies of that sport, police, and local councils,” she said in a statement today.

Zaiton added that approval was necessary so that all rules would be followed and the organisers’ financial and technical ability would not be questioned. She said the marathon’s organiser would face punitive action.

During the marathon on Sunday, runners Evelyn Ang, 44, Amiruddin Hamid, 37, and Ahmad Hadafi Jus, 42, were hit by a car.

Ang is in critical condition, while Amiruddin and Hadafi are in stable condition.

The driver of the car was arrested for reckless driving.
