This means that Umno president Najib Razak and vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is performing the duties of the deputy president, will continue leading the party.
It will also allow Zahid to be nominated as deputy president and win unchallenged.
Umno permanent chairman Badruddin Amiruddin passed the motion at the end of the morning session of the 2017 Umno general assembly after all the delegates voted in favour of it.
“In the spirit of unity, we have decided in this assembly that the post of president and deputy president will not be contested,” he said.
The proposal was made on Wednesday by Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.
Khairy said Umno Youth gave its fullest support to Najib and Zahid to continue helming the party.
“Umno Youth wants to propose that when we do win the general election, God willing, the positions of both president and deputy president will be uncontested,” he said.
