Chris Lee Chun Kit, who represents DAP in the Penang Island City Council, urged the police to probe Azizul who had claimed in a speech at the Umno general assembly that the royal institution was under siege by the “DAP Chinese”.
Lee said it was a blatant attempt by Azizul to play the age old game of framing DAP as villains in the eyes of Malaysians, especially the Malay community.
“DAP has always upheld the Federal Constitution, which includes according the highest respect to the royal institution.
“The way that the Besut Umno Youth chief has framed his speech shows he is trying to scare Malaysians into voting against Pakatan Harapan (PH) by portraying the DAP as a Chinese party that is trying to destroy the fabric of the nation.
“On the contrary, the DAP was, is and always will be a multiracial political party that fights for the welfare of all Malaysians regardless of race, religion and political beliefs,” Lee said in a statement.
Malaysiakini had reported Azizul as saying in his address at the debate session of the Umno general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) last night that DAP’s vision of “Malaysia for Malaysians” was to render the royal institution obsolete.
“Thus, on this stage, I would like to call upon my friends to band together to protect the royal institution, which acts as an umbrella to our religion.
“Let’s all stand up and state our vows,” the news portal had quoted him as saying.
Lee said with the approaching 14th general election, Umno was now desperate to ensure that the PH coalition did not unseat them from federal power.
“Thus, they are now making false accusations against DAP in order to discredit the coalition,” he said.
On Azizul’s call to the government not to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), as the groups (Chinese) pushing for its implementation did not even vote for the government in the last general election, Lee said Umno should not be playing racial politics.
“Umno should be using their general assembly to call for unity. Instead, it seems that they are back to playing the old ‘divide and rule’ game that reminds each community of their differences instead of calling for unity.
“Unlike Umno, the DAP does not discriminate against Malaysian groups that do not support the party.
“The Penang state government, in which DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng is also the chief minister, has helped all and has never denied aid to anyone even if they do not support the DAP or any other PH component parties.
“Umno must stop their hate-filled rhetoric for the sake of nation building,” Lee said.
