KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Assistant Finance Minister Ramlee Marhaban is suing two Parti Warisan Sabah leaders for insinuating that he is corrupt in a news report and postings on social media earlier this month.

In the legal suit filed through Messrs Nurul Rafeeqa Marcel Advocates at the High Court here today, Ramlee, who is also Bugaya assemblyman, said Warisan vice-president Junz Wong and Youth chief Mohd Azis Jamman had made the remarks in the news report published by The Borneo Post on Nov 14.

According to the writ of summons, the contents and the words in the said article referred or were intended to refer to Ramlee.

Furthermore, similar allegations were posted on Facebook, WhatsApp and other social media whether by Wong and Azis or other individuals, it claimed.

The suit also stated that the defendants or individuals connected to them had made unlawful use of a drone to intrude into Ramlee’s private property to take photographs and videos of his house, which violated his privacy.

Following the news report, Ramlee said, the Warisan leaders had accused him of being corrupt. Ramlee added that they also said he had abused his position in the state ministry of finance to accumulate wealth, had been enjoying a luxurious life at the expense of his constituents, had abused his position, had no respect for laws, was unfit to be an assemblyman or member of the cabinet and that all the cars in the house belonged to him.

As a result of these accusations, Ramlee claimed he had suffered loss and damage to his character, credit and reputation and had been brought into public scandal.

He accused Wong and Azis of having published their statements without seeking his comments or views, and thus were reckless in their actions.

Ramlee also said the words spoken by Wong and Azis were false, baseless and maliciously published.

Ramlee is claiming damages, including exemplary damages, an injunction to restrain the duo from further speaking or publishing defamatory words against him, an injunction against the defendants from intruding into his property, compensatory damages for libel in the sum of RM10 million, statutory interest costs and other relief deemed fit by the court.

The suit, which was filed through e-filing, has been fixed for mention on Jan 3 next year.
