Monsoon wind changes causing unusual fish landings

This follows speculation that earthquakes or a possible tsunami were leading to unusual landings of fish on the east coast.

KUANTAN:
Changes in the northeastern monsoon, and not the tsunami as speculated, was behind the rising number of fish landings at Pantai Beserah and Pantai Batu Hitam here.

Pahang Fisheries Department director Azahari Othman said the phenomenon of monsoon winds was normal and likely to recur in April next year.

“It is a common phenomenon that occurs every year.

“These monsoon winds bring along large quantities of small shrimps — food source for fish such as ‘gelama’ and ‘selayang’.

“When the shrimp land on the shores, the fish follow suit.

“This enables the fishermen to catch them easily,” he said after conducting a check at Pantai Batu Hitam here today.

Azahari said this when asked to comment on the widespread news on the unusual number of fish landings along the beach since Tuesday.

Netizens started to speculate that the phenomenon was a possible warning of an impending tsunami.

Azahari said fishermen in the area had informed him that the incident was not something new and due to changes in monsoon winds.

The large number of fish landings was expected to stop in the next few days, with the arrival of big waves.
