PETALING JAYA:
Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe frequently visited Singapore to receive treatment for his eye problems, The Straits Times reported, days after a UK daily said the couple may flee to Singapore or Malaysia as the military closes down on them.

According to The Straits Times, Mugabe began visiting Singapore for medical treatment in 2011, when he had his first cataract surgery there.

Three years later, he returned for another procedure, the report said.

This year alone, Mugabe visited Singapore at least twice, in March and July, for “scheduled medical reviews” and “routine medical check-ups”.

The 93-year-old was sacked by his own ZANU-PF party on Sunday but has remained defiant amid mounting pressure for him to step down.

He has been given less than 24 hours to quit as head of state or face impeachment, an attempt to secure a peaceful end to his tenure after a de facto military coup, Reuters said.

Mugabe has led his country since its independence in 1980.

On Nov 15, UK’s The Guardian said Mugabe and his wife, Grace, might flee to Singapore or Malaysia, where they own property.

Yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government would neither prevent nor object to Mugabe seeking medical treatment in Malaysia.

Zahid said he had received no word that Mugabe would come to Malaysia, but that he had come to Malaysia a number of times to seek medical treatment at private hospitals in the federal capital.

“Based on the records we have, he (Mugabe) had sought medical treatment in Malaysia at least three times in the last 10 years,” Zahid said.

The Straits Times reported that Grace, 52, had been said to spend thousands of dollars on shopping sprees in Singapore, while the couple’s daughter, Bona, had done her master’s degree in management at the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS)-University of Wales in 2012.
