PETALING JAYA: No significant seismic activity has been detected in the Indian Ocean recently, Star Online reported.

It said the Malaysian Meteorological Department had confirmed this.

“Based on our latest monitoring, there is no significant seismic activity in the Indian Ocean,” it said.

It said if there was any danger of a tsunami, it would alert the people quickly.

The department’s statement followed viral messages being spread over WhatsApp that a tsunami was likely to strike local shores.

The message claimed the sudden appearance of 10 whales that beached themselves off Aceh, Indonesia, on Monday, and appearance of thousands of fishes on the beach of an unnamed country were signs of a tsunami.

These were compounded by the prediction of an Indian professor, who claimed his extrasensory perception (ESP) had told him a devastating tsunami would be triggered by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean by the year-end.

Scientists are not taking this professor’s predictions seriously as it is not backed by any scientific study.

The meteorological department urged the public to get authentic information on earthquakes through its website at www.met.gov.my or its hotline at 03-7967 8066.
