PETALING JAYA: Selva Kumar Subbiah, once described as Canada’s “worst serial rapist” and who returned to Malaysia last February, has begun a new life in the United Kingdom, according to sources close to his family.

FMT understands that Selva, who spent 24 years in a Canadian prison, is now living with a relative in London.

He is said to want to build a new life and work there.

Selva went to Canada to further his studies.

But he soon became involved in cases of sexual assault and drugs.

In 1992, a court in Canada found him guilty of 18 counts of sexual assault, 28 counts of drugging his victims, 10 counts of various kinds of assault and 12 other charges including for extortion.

Police in Canada who investigated Selva had alleged he sexually assaulted about 1,000 women across the country in the late 1980s, a claim rejected by his family in Malaysia as ridiculous.

Last June, four months after his return to Malaysia, FMT reported that Selva had converted to Christianity and swore to change.

In Canada, he had told prison officers that he had embraced Judaism but this claim was believed to be a pretext to avoid being repatriated to Malaysia after his release.

His return on Feb 7 received various reactions, including calls to detain him or monitor him.

However, the police said they had no power to restrict his movements as he had served his sentence.

Former inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said that although there was no specific law to control the movements of Selva to ensure he did not pose a threat to the public, the police would monitor him “from afar” based on existing legal provisions.

The media and various authorities in Canada had previously warned that Selva was unrepentant for his crimes.
