PETALING JAYA: Electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0 has won the prestigious Asia Democracy and Human Rights Award (ADHRA) for its efforts in promoting democracy among Malaysians.

In a statement, Bersih chairperson Maria China Abdullah said the coalition had emerged “resolute” in its quest for justice and democracy.

She also said it was fitting that Bersih should receive the award in the year of its 10th anniversary.

“After 10 years of fighting for clean and fair elections, institutional reform and demanding for a just and representative electoral system, Bersih and its supporters have come a long way in breaking through the culture of fear, religious divides, and discovering strength through solidarity and a dream of a fair and democratic Malaysia.

“This could never happen without the people’s support, confidence and bravery.”

Maria also urged the public to recognise and protect their rights as voters.

“The struggle does not end here. We need the people to stand up and protect their right to vote,” she said.

Bersih will receive the award from the chair of the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy on Dec 10, in conjunction with International Human Rights Day.

This is not the first international human rights award Bersih has received.

Last April, it won South Korea’s 2016 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights for its efforts in pushing for electoral reform in Malaysia.

Among the objectives Bersih achieved was the setting up of a parliamentary select committee for electoral reform, the use of indelible ink during elections, and the empowerment of overseas voters.

Bersih also organised Malaysia’s largest democratic assembly in 2015.

The Bersih 4 rally, held in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 29 and Aug 30, 2015, was said to have attracted some 500,000 people.
