KUALA LUMPUR:
A seven-man crime prevention patrol team was set upon by a group of Chinese nationals found gambling at the porch of a house in Jalan Abraham, off Jalan Khoo Teik Ee, here, last night, forcing them to fire warning shots in self-defence.

Dang Wangi police chief ACP Shaharudin Abdullah said the police personnel were set upon by about 30 men, when the team had gone there at 10.30pm upon receiving information about the men’s gambling activities.

“The situation got out of hand and the men from the Tun H S Lee police station had to fire four warning shots in self-defence. No one was hurt,” he told Bernama.

He said four patrol teams in MPVs were despatched to assist the team which called for help.

He said the Chinese nationals were brought to the Dang Wangi police station for documentation after the situation was brought under control.

Investigations found that several houses there had been used as kongsi (quarters) for workers from China, he said.

“About 200 workers from China are believed to be staying there,” he added.

Unlicensed gambling is illegal in Malaysia.
