PETALING JAYA: Jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim successfully underwent surgery on his right shoulder today, a statement issued by his family said.

The “arthroscopic” surgery was carried out at Hospital Kuala Lumpur by its surgical team.

The statement said Anwar was taken into the operating theatre at 9am and the procedure was completed about 1.30pm.

“He is now awake although still in pain. He is responsive and has been placed in the intensive care unit.

“We hope all his friends and grandchildren will be patient as doctors have advised against any visitors to prevent infections,” the statement said.

The family said Anwar’s imprisonment and a recent accident had worsened the condition of his shoulder.

The family also thanked well-wishers and hoped they would continue praying for Anwar’s recovery.

Anwar’s shoulder injury was originally due to an accident in 2014 in Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur.

He had undergone physiotherapy but the pain had become worse over time.

Anwar’s condition deteriorated following an accident on Sept 22, when an escort vehicle rammed into the back of the prison transport ferrying him from Kuala Lumpur Hospital back to prison.

Anwar is serving a five-year jail sentence after being found guilty of sodomy. He has maintained his innocence and claimed that the charges were politically motivated.
