Zahid, who is also the home minister, said Zamihan was an expert in rehabilitating those involved in terrorist activities.
“Even though he is prohibited from giving religious talks in Selangor, his expertise in rehabilitating terrorists or potential terrorists is of value,” he said.
Zamihan recently stirred controversy after he criticised the Johor sultan for condemning a Muslim-only launderette in Muar, while describing non-Muslims as unclean.
The officer at Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) was subsequently investigated for sedition, and his teaching credentials revoked by the Selangor palace.
Two days ago, he shared a picture of himself outside the Tapah Prison in Perak, where he had just conducted a deradicalisation programme attended by IS militants detained there.
Zamihan’s continued role in the programme was questioned by PKR, who said he was not a suitable person to be assigned in dealing with recovering IS-linked individuals.
But Zahid said Zamihan had a proven track record.
“He is an asset when it comes to rehabilitating the faith of those who have gone astray.”
