GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government has sent out a nationwide plea for volunteers to help clean up the flood-hit state this weekend.

Dubbed “Hari Sukarelawan Pulau Pinang Bangkit”, the event will take place on Nov 11 and 12.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who announced this today, said the respective village development and security committees (JKKKs) would spearhead the efforts in affected areas.

“We urge all Penangites and Malaysians to head to the flood-affected areas to be together with us to help Penang bounce back to normalcy as soon as possible,” he said at a press conference at the state assembly.

Four state executive councillors have been selected to head the weekend’s event. They are Chong Eng (Seberang Perai) and Danny Law Heng Kiang (Island) on Saturday and Dr Afif Bahardin (Seberang Perai) and Deputy CM I Mohd Rashid Hasnon (Island) on Sunday.

Over half of Penang was submerged in flood waters following hours of torrential rain over the weekend. The floods claimed the lives of seven people and forced more than 6,000 people to flee their homes.

Earlier, Lim announced a slew of relief measures to help Penangites affected by the floods.

Among the measures is a RM500 one-off payment for those affected and a discount on water bills.
