Orang Asli in Camerons need better roads, says DAP

The DAP's former Cameron Highlands candidate M Manogaran says the Orang Asli also have rights to the country's funds.

PETALING JAYA:
The Cameron Highlands DAP has accused the federal government of ignoring the needs of the Orang Asli, such as the need for proper roads in their areas.

The criticism came in the wake of a DAP visit to the Orang Asli village of Pos Titum in Jelai, Cameron Highlands, last Sunday.

The purpose of the visit was to provide three electric guitars to the local church.

According to a pastor from Habu, Cameron Highlands, Mondon Linau, the locals are truly talented musicians but do not have proper equipment.

Speaking to FMT, the DAP’s former Cameron Highlands candidate M Manogaran said the journey was riddled with obstacles due to the rainy weather and the terrible condition of the road leading to Pos Titum.

“The journey from Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands, started at 8.20am and we only arrived at Pos Titum at 3pm. The journey should have only taken three hours.

“The question to ask here is why isn’t the government building proper roads for the Orang Asli? Do they not have rights to the country’s funds as well?”
“Ironically, through the chaotic weather and terrible road conditions we could also see signboards saying ‘Barisan Nasional thanks the Orang Asli’.

“What is the meaning of this gratitude if the Orang Asli are forced to suffer?”

In the last general election, the DAP managed to secure victory in the Pos Titum district. It was the first time the opposition managed to win at an Orang Asli village in Cameron Highlands.
