PETALING JAYA:
A DAP branch in Johor has filed objections to the Election Commission (EC) over army personnel voters registered at a base in Segamat that is still under construction.

Mengkibol assemblyman Tan Hong Pin said the Segamat army base was scheduled to be completed in April 2018 but 1,051 army voters were already registered to vote in the area.

“Yesterday, we submitted 1,051 objections to the Election Commission in Johor,” he told reporters during a press conference at Bersih 2.0 headquarters here.

The Johor DAP Youth chief said the branch had carried out a donation drive recently and raised RM10,000 to pay for the objection process.

“Each objection costs RM10. If the objection is rejected by EC, we have to pay a maximum fine of RM200 for each name,” he explained.

The MP for Segamat is MIC chief S Subramaniam who won with a majority of 1,217 votes against PKR’s Chua Jui Meng in 2013.

Tan also raised concerns over the missing signage at the Segamat army base.

He said during his first visit on Oct 29, the sign board had clearly stated that construction would be completed in April 2018.

“But last Friday, when we visited the site again with (DAP supremo) Lim Kit Siang, the sign board was missing,” he added.

Meanwhile, in a statement, PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar called for immediate action by the EC on the issue.

“If the EC does not give a detailed reply, a lot of people may question the credibility and intention of the EC,” she said.

Nurul Izzah added this could create a negative perception of the EC as the general election was near.

The 14th general election must be called by August next year.
