JOHOR BAHRU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained a senior officer with the Johor Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) to assist investigations into a corruption case.

The 47-year-old suspect, who is the DOSH deputy director of operations, was detained at the Johor MACC office at 11pm yesterday.

The MACC said in a statement that following his detention, an investigation team raided three separate locations here and found cash amounting to RM40,400 and S$1,613 (RM5,000).

Also seized were several documents pertaining to a project.

According to the MACC, the suspect is believed to have received a bribe of RM8,000 from a petroleum engineering company project manager.

The money was alleged to have been given through a DOSH officer, who was detained prior to this, as an incentive not to take action against the company which had installed a grip hoist without the permission of DOSH.

Johor MACC director Azmi Alias, when contacted, confirmed the arrest, saying the suspect had been taken to court for a remand order.

On Oct 31, a Johor DOSH assistant director was also detained on suspicion of being involved in a case of demanding and receiving a bribe from the same project manager.

The 37-year-old suspect was detained at a hotel in Johor Bahru at 2.40pm on that day and through investigations, the suspect was found to have demanded and received a bribe of RM30,000.
