Despite the large decline in overall car sales in September due to the public holidays in Malaysia, the year-to-date total industry volume (TIV) rose 1.7% to 425,711 units from 418,277 units last year, the national carmaker said in a statement today.
“Proton benefited from its Saga and Persona launches in August and September 2016 respectively,” said vice-president of sales and marketing Abdul Rashid Musa.
He added that with the upgrades to both cars, Proton had gained traction in car sales. The Saga and Persona made up 42.7% (24,061 units) and 27.4% (15,448 units) respectively of the company’s overall car sales, year-to-date.
“Both these models also performed much better than in 2016 with an increase of 9,661 units. Persona saw a 90% increase year-to-date compared with the same period last year.
“Our efforts to bring Proton cars closer to consumers are beginning to show results,” said Rashid, adding that Proton had been conducting roadshows more aggressively, going into more busy areas especially during weekends, and displaying the key safety features of the cars which had generated much interest among the public.
“This shows a positive sign for Proton, and this is why we need a good partner with us to ensure that we can continue to remain competitive in the market.
“We are aware there will be constant challenges coming our way and with our partner, we shall continuously work together for a better outcome,” he added.
Proton has also extended its Amazing 5 promotion, with five years’ free service and five years’ warranty for cars purchased nationwide.
