KUALA LUMPUR:
Police today withdrew the personal bodyguard service provided by the police Special Action Unit (UTK) for the protection of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The withdrawal of the personal bodyguard service comes a year after Putrajaya ended the contract of Mahathir’s cook and office assistant.

“Today, the services of UTK were withdrawn. The struggle continues,” the 92-year-old chairman of the opposition front, Pakatan Harapan, wrote in a Facebook post.

Last year, Mahathir’s police outriders were also withdrawn after his privileges were revoked following his attendance at anti-government events.

Former inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar had said then that Mahathir would have to apply for traffic police escorts that would be approved only if he was attending an official government function.

Khalid said he had decided on this because it did not make sense providing Mahathir with outriders to a function that was anti-government or illegal in nature.

An English daily had quoted Khalid as saying, “We will consider traffic police escorts for Mahathir on a case-by-case basis.

“But I did not withdraw his personal bodyguard, who is a policeman from the UTK, for his personal safety,” Khalid had said then.

Now, Mahathir has to apply to IGP for outrider escorts
