Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also the home minister, said action must be taken to show the law applied equally to everyone, irrespective of their position and standing.
“What most disappointed me was being told by the Rela director-general that the ‘Datuk Seri’ offered RM10,000 to each of the Rela members as a bribe to withdraw their police reports.
“This is also a case of attempted bribery to cover up an offence, so the three Rela members should report it to the MACC and police,” he said at an event here today.
Yesterday, Selangor CID chief SAC Fadzil Ahmat told FMT that the 29-year-old “Datuk Seri” surrendered himself at the Ampang district police headquarters at about 4pm.
The case is being investigated under Section 186 (obstructing a public officer on duty) and Section 324 (causing hurt) of the Penal Code.
Zahid also said the home ministry would not hesitate to revoke the firearm licence of the “Datuk Seri” if he was found to have misused it.
“If he had misused his firearm, I will surely direct the ministry’s secretary-general and the secretary of the ministry’s security division to review his licence.”
He said the “Datuk Seri” should be mindful of his conduct and social status so the public would respect him.
A state title was not a licence to rough up other people and break the law, he said.
“I don’t want to argue about the prerogative of the authority concerned to award the title. There must have been basis for the person to receive the high award.”
In the incident at about 6.30am on Friday, the three Rela members — Melvin Cheong Mun Khai, 19, Lee Weng Poh, 27, and Leong Jiun Jie, 21 – suffered injuries to their head, eye and abdomen after they were allegedly punched and kicked by the suspect.
The assault happened after the Rela members asked the “Datuk Seri” to move his Toyota Vellfire as the vehicle was obstructing traffic.
Ampang district Rela chief Ho Hoong Keong was quoted by China Press as saying that he had been contacted by four men who offered RM10,000 each to him and the three Rela members to withdraw their police reports against the “Datuk Seri”.
Ho, accompanied by the three Rela members, held a media conference yesterday to announce their rejection of the cash offer.
