“Probably there are others out there who are also concerned about how important the environment is. I’m quite sure they will do something about it,” he told FMT.
He was asked if anyone in DAP would speak out on environmental issues after Teh announced he wanted to leave the party.
Teh told The Star on Saturday that he planned to leave DAP after the state assembly was dissolved, citing he “cannot follow the party any longer”.
“I am not in line with the party leadership. There have been no reforms. It’s time for me to go,” he was quoted as saying.
Both Teh and Tan have been strong advocates of the environment and spoken out on hills being developed for housing.
Teh has been critical of the state government, especially on deforestation and development issues. He had previously shaved his head bald to protest a highrise development project in his constituency and put up banners to object to a land reclamation project in Pulau Gazumbo.
Tan, on the other hand, had written poems on his social media accounts to highlight environmental issues, including the latest Tanjung Bungah landslide on Oct 21 that killed 11 construction workers.
He was previously accused by the party’s secretary-general Lim Guan Eng of being “incommunicado” after Tan posted a Malay poem on the lack of green areas in Balik Pulau.
Tan, an eight-term MP, also said everyone will have a different perception of Teh’s planned departure from DAP.
“What is more important is finding out the cause of the landslide and then work out a solution for future hillside developments.”
He also said state and federal governments should step up their cooperation on land matters such as deforestation.
“Both governments should be tasked with ensuring the buildings adhere to the instructions laid out by the authorities.”
