KOTA KINABALU: Shafie Apdal was released on bail today following his remand in connection with the alleged misappropriation of RM1.5 billion allocated for rural development projects in Sabah.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus ordered the Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) president to be released on RM100,000 bail with RM80,000 to be deposited under sureties.

The former rural and regional development minister was also ordered to report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office once a month.

Shafie arrived at the court at around 9.30am and was immediately brought to Cindy’s chambers before coming out again 20 minutes later.

He was greeted by his party leaders, including vice-presidents Junz Wong, Jaujan Sambakong and Peter Anthony.

The Semporna MP was arrested on Oct 19 after he went to the MACC office to give a statement in connection with several projects under the rural and regional development ministry between 2009 and 2015, when he was the minister.

He spent the first two nights of his remand in hospital after the doctor determined that he had to be warded as his blood pressure was too high.

However, Shafie reportedly discharged himself from the hospital on Oct 21 before accompanying MACC officers to search his house in Taman Golf View.

No document was removed from the house in the search.

His lawyers challenged the legality of his remand by MACC, saying the order contravened the MACC Act 2009.

However, their application was rejected by the High Court and Shafie’s remand was extended by four days.

His lawyers had sought to get an early release for Shafie to enable him to attend the annual budget debate at the Dewan Rakyat today.

His party leaders also initiated a crowdfunding campaign to raise the RM300,000 expected bail on Monday.

Following his release this morning, he was brought to the MACC office for processing.

It is unclear if he will be able to attend the budget debate which is scheduled for 3pm today.

Shafie’s brother and Lahad Datu assemblyman Yusof Apdal, who was detained by the anti-graft agency on Oct 17, was released earlier on Monday.

Another of Shafie’s younger brothers, Hamid, and Hamid’s businessman son-in-law, were also released on bail last week.

Other Warisan leaders who were detained and later released were Anthony and Youth chief Azis Jamman.

It was earlier reported that the MACC was scrutinising a total of 72 projects out of an original list of 350 under the ministry for suspected embezzlement of funds.

The projects were planned to be carried out between 2009 and 2015 in Kota Kinabalu, Kudat, Kota Belud, Ranau, Beaufort, Keningau, Lahad Datu, Tawau and Sandakan.

The RM1.5 billion was said to be part of RM7.5 billion allocated for water, electricity and road infrastructure development projects.

Some RM170 million in bank accounts and assets of the companies involved in the projects have reportedly been frozen.

More than 45 people have been questioned since the probe began.

Opposition leaders claimed the investigation was politically motivated to smear the image of Warisan ahead of the 14th general election, but Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and the MACC have denied this, insisting that the agency operated independently.
