PETALING JAYA: Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali has lodged police reports against blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin over an online article carrying a corruption allegation against him, NST Online reported.

Apandi confirmed with the news portal that the reports were filed in Kuantan and Putrajaya on Sunday.

“Confirmed, I did lodge the police reports,” he said in a WhatsApp message, NST Online reported.

Apandi said the offence should come under Section 499 of the Penal Code for criminal defamation.

Kuantan district police chief ACP Abdul Aziz Salleh confirmed receiving the report.

He said apart from Section 499, the investigation was also being conducted under Section 233 (1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

On Oct 22, an online portal of an English daily reported Apandi as rubbishing the allegation contained in the blog and threatening to sue Raja Petra “till kingdom come”.

He said he would consult lawyers in the UK, where Petra is currently based, after leaving the country in the midst of a court case.

In the article on Friday, the blogger claimed there was a meeting in 2015 between then chief justice Arifin Zakaria, current chief justice Raus Shariff and current Court of Appeal president Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin with Prime Minister Najib Razak.

He claimed the meeting was about an alleged plot by then attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail with some others to bring down the government through investigations on 1MDB and its former subsidiary, SRC International.

Raja Petra also alleged Apandi had demanded RM4 million from a Chinese businessman, identified as a “business partner” of the Sultan of Johor, on a case he had won.

On Monday, FMT reported retired judge Gopal Sri Ram as urging Apandi to lodge a police report against the blogger for criminal defamation.

Lawyer SN Nair had also urged Apandi to seek the assistance of the British public prosecutor to extradite the blogger to face criminal charges in Malaysia.

Nair said Raja Petra had committed cyber law crimes of both nations by posting offensive, malicious or false articles on Apandi and several other personalities.

“The public prosecutor could accede to the request as both nations have similar legal provisions to comply with extradition rules,” said Nair, a former policeman involved in extradition matters.
