GEORGE TOWN:
Elite search and rescue teams scoured the Tanjung Bungah landslide site through the wee hours of the morning, and pulled out the sixth body of a construction worker at 4.20am this morning.

The sixth body has been identified as that of a Myanmar man, according to a statement by the Penang Fire and Rescue Department.

Eight bodies still remain buried under the 35-metre mound of earth that collapsed from the hillside.

The nationalities of those buried alive are Bangladeshis (8), Myanmars (including Rohingya) (2), Indonesians (2), Pakistanis (1) and Malaysian (1).

The Malaysian was the construction site supervisor while the rest were workers.

The search was aided by the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (Smart) and Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team of the Fire and Rescue Department, or Storm, for short.

Officials said the search was initially called off at 8pm yesterday due to insufficient lighting. However, Smart and Storm teams arrived on the scene with backup generators and floodlights.

So far the bodies of those who have been recovered from the mud and rubble are of Bangladeshi nationals, Hussin and Yunus, recovered at 9.55am and 10.45am yesterday, according to Bernama.

The third was that of Myanmar national, Elyas, that was found at 1.10pm.

The fourth and fifth body, identified as those of Indonesians Hosrin and Erwin, were recovered at 11.31pm yesterday and 2.45am today, respectively.

The sixth body was recovered at 3.59am today, although the identity has yet to be ascertained.

In the 8.50am incident yesterday, earth from a 10-metre high hill slope came crashing down onto the construction site located near the Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) in Tanjung Bungah.

The affordable housing condominium being developed at the site by a private company was slated to be completed by June 2020. It was to consist of two 49-storey towers of 980 units.
