RM1.5b probe: Remand extended for ex-ministry staff

MACC gets remand order on former deputy secretary of rural and regional development ministry extended for another 6 days.

MACC-Sabah
PUTRAJAYA: A suspect in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) probe into the alleged misappropriation of RM1.5 billion allocated for rural projects in Sabah has been remanded for another six days.

MACC’s request for the remand extension on the former deputy secretary of the rural and regional development ministry was granted by Magistrate Norhidayati Mohammad Nasroh.

The 40-year-old woman, will now be held until Oct 17 to assist the anti-graft agency in its investigation.

The woman in question had been held in the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya since last Friday.

The MACC alleges she was involved in the misappropriation involving RM180 million from the RM1.5 billion.

Yesterday, Hamid Apdal, the younger brother of Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) president Shafie Apdal, was arrested at the MACC office in Kota Kinabalu at 9.30pm, after an entire day of investigation by the graft-busters.

He is expected to be brought to court later today for MACC’s remand application hearing at the Kota Kinabalu Magistrate court after being linked to the same case.

Five other people are now under remand in connection with the case: Warisan vice-president Peter Anthony, Warisan Youth chief Azis Jamman, Tenom Umno Youth head Jamawi Jaafar, Tawau Umno Youth leader Ariffin Kassim and a local businessman.

This brings to seven the number of people arrested in connection with the case. Last week, MACC said it aimed to talk to 32 people in the course of its investigation.

It was earlier reported that 350 projects under the rural and regional development ministry are being scrutinized by MACC over allegations of embezzlement involving RM1.5 billion in federal funds.

These projects were planned to be carried out between 2009 and 2015 in Kota Kinabalu, Kudat, Kota Belud, Ranau, Beaufort, Keningau, Lahad Datu, Tawau, and Sandakan.

The RM1.5 billion was said to be part of RM7.5 billion allocated for water, electricity, and road infrastructure development projects.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has denied claims that the investigation is a political move against Warisan.
