PETALING JAYA:
Malaysian militant Muhammad Joraimee Awang Raimee has been confirmed killed in Marawi City in the Philippines.

Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun, who confirmed the death, told The Star that Joraimee, also known as Abu Nur, was killed on Sept 28 in southern Philippines.

This followed reports on Oct 1 that Joraimee, 42, was believed to have been killed during aerial bombing as troops regained Bato Mosque.

He was one of several Malaysians who had worked with militant outfits, including Abu Sayyaf, in launching attacks and conducting criminal activities.

Joraimee, a former employee of the Selayang Municipal Council, was also an associate of Malaysia’s most wanted terrorist, Mahmud Ahmad.

Mahmud reportedly received training at an al-Qaeda camp in Afghanistan under Osama bin Laden while studying at Pakistan’s Islamabad Islamic University in the late 1990s.

He then returned to Malaysia and obtained his doctoral degree at the University of Malaya where he taught at the Department of Aqidah and Islamic Thought.

Mahmud fled to southern Philippines in 2014 after his militant background was exposed by police.

He is thought to still be in Marawi, along with Sabahans Mohd Amin Baco and Jeknal Adil, and another Malaysian nicknamed “Pendek”.

More than 750 militants, 155 troops and 47 civilians have been killed in the clashes that began on May 23.
