Roslan Ismail, 44, was parking his motorcycle by the roadside near a sundry shop when the incident occurred.
“We had just arrived at the sundry shop to buy some equipment for my grass cutting machine,” the New Straits Times quoted Roslan as saying.
Roslan said he got off his motorcycle and was about to pick up his son, Muhammad Amar Danish, who was sitting in the motorcycle’s basket, when a lorry knocked down his motorcycle, causing him and his son to fall.
He said Amar fell onto to the road and was then run over and dragged by the lorry’s rear tyre.
“I had initially refused to take my son to the sundry shop, but he insisted on following me,” the grief-stricken father said, adding that his son died on the spot.
“I cannot believe that I lost my son,” the father of seven said.
Roslan said Amar would be buried at the Permatang Tok Gelam Muslim burial ground in Kepala Batas.
Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the lorry was travelling from Bakar Kapor and had knocked into the right side of Roslan’s motorcycle.
“The grass cutting machine, which was in the motorcycle’s basket, got stuck to the lorry, causing the vehicle to drag the victim,” Noorzainy was quoted as saying by NST.
He said the case would be investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by dangerous or reckless driving.
